The financial package for media/ President: journalists should not be forsaken; Rama: big media can apply for loans
The European Association of Journalists Albanian Section sent a letter to the country’s leaders, carbon-copying to it the Ambassadors of Sweden, United States, and the Heads of Delegation of European Union to Albania, OSCE Presence in Albania, and Council of Europe Office in Tirana.
In this letter, they call for the initiation of a multidimensional financial support package for the media outlets in the country, in view of the fact that the shutdown needed to fight the COVID-19 outbreak is also leading to a partial shutdown of the media companies and the laying off of a great number of journalists.
They said that the financial support package should involve all kinds of media and should be drafted in consultation with the journalists themselves. President of the Republic Ilir Meta shared the latter on his official Facebook page, saying that the media, journalists, and support personnel cannot be abandoned in this difficult situation.
“My gratitude and solidarity go to the heroic excellent work done by them in the service of public information and transparency and in defense of the health of Albanian citizens,” Meta said. In a TV interview in the evening, Prime Minister Edi Rama considered the media companies as big businesses.
He said that the big businesses are not supported through grants, but rather they can avail themselves of the $100mln worth sovereign guarantee fund created by the government in co-operation with the second-tier banks. He urged them to apply for loans through that financial instrument that would start becoming operational on Monday.
