The third anniversary of the approval of justice reform’s constitutional

The third anniversary of the unanimous approval of the constitutional amendments needed to implement the justice reform was marked with an event held at the Albanian Assembly and with the inauguration of the Justice Pole, a state building that will host the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Councils and the Magistrates’ School. In remarks delivered at this event, the United States Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Leyla Moses-Ones said that the U.S. would continue to stand with Albania as the justice system reform reshaped its future. Head of the International Monitoring Operation Genoveva Ruiz Calavera said in remarks delivered at this event that the European Union (EU) would continue to support the justice system reform with €42mln in funding. The United States Embassy published a video message in Albanian on its Facebook page, explaining the dynamics of the justice reform in Albania.

Commenting on this anniversary, President of the Republic Ilir Meta said he was proud of having insisted in his capacity as former Assembly Speaker for the consensual approval of the constitutional amendments, in order to prevent the justice system’s capture through the same. Meta said that, through that unanimous consensus, Albania had received the recommendation for the launching of accession negotiations with the EU. According to him, the membership talks would only be launched when the Albanian people would be able to vote in free, fair, democratic, all-inclusive, and all-accepted elections for every level of government. According to the President, the membership talks would be launched when the justice system reform’s implementation would strengthen the rule of law, the public interests and guarantee the democratic rights and basic freedoms of Albanian citizens.

Prime Minister Rama said that three years after the constitutional amendments’ approval, one could see how vital and right this move was by listening to the reform’s enemies and looking at their actions. Rama said he was grateful to friends and partners that helped his government in what he said was a battle for the future.

Democratic Party Legal Secretary Çlirim Gjata said that the ruling issued last Friday by the Durrës Court confirming the election of Valbona Sako (SP) as the new Mayor of Durrës epitomizes what he said was the private justice system erected by Edi Rama, three years after the consensual approval of the constitutional amendments needed for the justice system reform’s implementation. Socialist Movement for Integration Chair Monika Kryemadhi said in a reaction that the justice system reform must be freed from the clientelist-political capture allegedly perpetrated by Edi Rama and his Rebirth clique.
