The US Ambassador Disappointed over Serbian Opposition Boycott of the Elections
It would be in the best American interest to aid Serbia to reach full membership in European Union (EU), which would also be the best way to secure stability in Western Balkans, the US Ambassador to Belgrade Anthony Godfrey said and added that he was disappointed with a decision of part of the opposition to boycott the upcoming elections.
He explained that President Donald Trump sent him to Serbia to improve the relations between the two countries and do whatever he could in terms of better stability in the region.
“We want Serbia to be a prosperous, stable country, where people have the right to express themselves, speak freely, start businesses and work together”, Godfrey emphasized.
When asked what were his impressions about Serbia, government, opposition, and freedom of media, Godfrey said that his colleagues “warned that there were significant challenges, especially in area of media”, and that “it is very important in the period before the upcoming elections for all people to be able to hear all opinions”, Godfrey said.
It seemed to him that free access to the media should be improved before the next elections, and thus he, together with EU and OSCE, worked with the Serbian Government to pay more attention to it.
Godfrey did not believe that the media surrounding was sufficient so everyone in the pre-election period could understand what was going on in the country.
“Our position did not change, we were clear about it. We are disappointed by the decision of the opposition parties to boycott the elections. We believe that it is important for people in Serbia to be able to reach decisions independently”, Godfrey emphasized.
As he explained, removing people’s right to “independently reach decisions does not contribute to the democratic development of Serbia”.
“The studies that we saw suggest that the government had a significant advantage in terms of visibility of its opinion. However, we hope and work on improving the situation in that area”, Godfrey added.
