Trial for Setting of the US Embassy Building in Belgrade on Fire Adjourned Again
The preparatory hearing in the court case against five police officers charged with failures to secure the US embassy building during the rally “Kosovo Is Serbia” back in 2008 (when the embassy building was set on fire and one young man died) was due to be held in the Belgrade High Court on Monday, but was postponed for the second time.
The hearing, at which the evidence to be presented at the main trial should be presented, was postponed due to the absence of one of the accused’s defense attorneys, who was allegedly unable to attend it due to work responsibilities.
Although it was planned that the five police officers would lead to the charges, they did not do so, as this required the presence of all defense attorneys.
Police officers are charged with a grave offense against public safety. At the time of the riots in front of the US Embassy building, they were at important positions in the Belgrade police, the Police Directorate of the Serbian Ministry of Interior (MUP) and the Gendarmerie.
The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office charges Mladen Kuribak, Slobodan Vukolic, Stevan Bjelic, Zoran Raskovic, and Bojan Markovic.
The trial is due to continue on November 27, and the preparatory hearing was originally scheduled for July, this year when it was adjourned for the first time.
At the beginning of 2019, the Appellant Courts acquitted a group of young men accused of taking part in the riots outside the US embassy building and “causing public danger” due to the lack of evidence
