Twitter Cancels Thousands of Profiles Promoting Serbian President
The company controlling Twitter social network announced on Thursday that their teams for checking the authenticity of users have canceled 8.558 profiles, which, according to their words, were engaged in the promotion of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Serbia and their leader Aleksandar Vucic.
“By the end of last year, we have identified a group of profiles connected in a non-authentic coordinated activity that led to the removal of 8.558 profiles that worked on the promotion of Serbian ruling party and their leader”, it was stated by the company from the official profile Twitter Safety.
The accounts had posted more than 43 million tweets amplifying positive news coverage of Vučić’s government and attacking his political opponents.
The mentioned accounts are controlled by the so-called bots, people working in state-owned companies, however without specific tasks there, with just an obligation to promote SNS and Vucic throughout the day.
Bots are leaving typical comments under the news on web portals (primarily pro-opposition oriented) and each one of them is also controlling at least ten profiles on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
In their public “appearances” these mercenaries of the ruling party (by using state money) are mostly repeating the announcements of the government and Vucic, and occasionally they are trying to get involved in discussions because this would give them additional points and additional payment.
It is presumed that there are more than 10.000 bots with more than 100.000 false profiles.
