US Ambassador Concerned Over Freedom House Report on Serbia

The US Ambassador in Serbia Anthony Godfrey expressed concern over estimates from the latest Freedom House report in which Serbia was relegated to the category of “hybrid regimes” with authoritarian governments and underlined the importance of fair elections, freedom of media and democratic institutions.

“I am concerned about such estimates. Fair elections can be the way for Serbia to show that it is attached to democratic values. There is a need for freedom of media and for a parliament where all political standpoints in Serbia can be voiced and openly discussed” Godfrey stated on his Tweeter.

In the latest report of Freedom House, for the first time, Serbia has not been ranked among “partially consolidated democracies” but among “hybrid regimes” where governments are based on authoritarianism as the consequence of incomplete democratic changes
