US ambassador: Serbia Needs Free Elections, Not Just Free Election Day

US Ambassador to Serbia Anthony Godfrey said that Serbia should have free elections and not just a free election day.

“I mean the creating of an atmosphere in which all political views can be expressed,” the ambassador told the holiday issue of Belgrade daily Danas.

“I hope that all political groups will be represented at the elections but I fear that won’t be the case which is not good for Serbia. I would be disappointed if a lot of Serbian citizens did not get a chance to express their view,” Godfrey said and added that he is convinced that political leaders understand the importance of having fair elections in 2020.

Commenting on the media in Serbia, Godfrey said that access to electronic media is limited for people who disagree with the government. "We know of threats to journalists which create unnecessary tension and an environment in which people do not feel free to express their views. The United States want the freedom of expression, we know that Serbia does as well but I, like most Serbians, would like to see that implemented better in practice," the ambassador said.

Godfrey said that the US will continue its diplomatic activities in Kosovo in the year when elections are being held in the US and Serbia but added that it will take a lot of effort to reach a compromise between Belgrade and Pristina.
