US Envoy to Pristina and Belgrade Requires Simultaneous Lifting of Tariffs and

Kosovo must suspend its tariffs on Serb goods but at the same time, Serbia has to discontinue its campaign for the withdrawal of Kosovo recognitions, special envoy of the US president for peace negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina Richard Grenell declared.

Grenell made the statement after meeting in Pristina with Kosovo prime minister-designate and leader of Self-Determination Movement Albin Kurti and conveyed the same message to journalists following his arrival in Belgrade where he is due to meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Friday.

Grenell told journalists in Belgrade that he said in Kosovo that “tariffs must be lifted”, but that he will insist at the same time for Serbia to discontinue its campaign for the withdrawal of Kosovo recognition.

He said the two things must happen at the same time and that he thinks it will happen soon.

Grenell said “the business community wants this to happen and that ordinary people urge for it” and added the focus should be on developing the economy and creating jobs, not on political issues.

He said he can sense “positive energy from both sides”, but that the US President Donald Trump won’t allow him to do this for long unless progress is made.

Asked about US expectation regarding Serbia and Kosovo reaching an agreement, as the EU-brokered dialogue in Brussels has been in limbo for close to fourteen months, Grenell said the US does not want to waste its time.

Grenell said the US has no special ideas to suggest to their counterparts in Belgrade, and that their intention is “to get the two sides closer together”.

He said that “little time remains to take this chance” and expressed hope that “Serbs, the people of Kosovo and their governments will grab this opportunity”.
