US Official: We Hope the Opposition Will Back Down from Election Boycott

The US hopes that the opposition in Serbia will back down from an election boycott and that they will reach an agreement on the election terms with government officials, stated US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Palmer.

In an interview for Voice of America, he said that he believes that there are many issues related to equal election conditions in Serbia.

“If the opposition does not believe that the conditions are fair, there is space for an open dialogue, an open discussion on this. We hoped that an agreement will be reached and that a way will be found for all political parties to take part in the elections so that the citizens of Serbia will have the right choice,” Palmer said.

“We hope that the two sides will be able to reach an agreement and that the opposition will take part in the election process because we have constantly encouraged them to do so,” Palmer said.

Speaking about the media situation in Serbia, Palmer said that he “discussed the issue of freedom of the media with officials on all levels in Belgrade.”

“That is something that Serbia must resolve in order to make progress on its European path. The EU will be carefully monitoring the atmosphere in which media in Serbia operate because that is very important for Serbia’s European prospects,” the American official said.
