Senior US officials – from the White House, the State Department and the Ministry of Defence issued a request to the leaders of Kosovo for the abolishment of the 100% taxes on products from Serbia, introduced in November, Pristina media reported on Tuesday.

The request was issued by US officials, Matthew Palmer, Laura Cooper and John Erath, who warned that the moves of Kosovo, among which they underlined the taxes, have prevented the US from continuing cooperation with the Kosovo authorities “on a large number of goals”.

Kosovo leaders, Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, President Hashim Thaci and Parliament Speaker Kadri Veseli have been warned that, if they do not abolish the taxes, “broader sanctions” would ensue.

Belgrade media, reporting on this news, remind that the US had, after Kosovo did not listen to their request to abolish taxes, decided to take some steps and that the first was the cancellation of the visit of the Commander of the National Guard of Iowa, General Timothy Orr.

The three US officials, in the letter to the highest Kosovo officials, announced that the US would carefully look into the other aspects of cooperation and evaluate whether they could be diminished.

The letter calls on the respect of the sacrifices of the American state and American soldiers for Kosovo.

The US officials conveyed that it was the intention of their country to see that Serbia and Kosovo behaved responsibly so as to again establish dialogue, and the first step on this path had to be the abolishment of the taxes, media report.
