Vucic after Meeting Palmer: Resumption of Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue Possible in

Belgrade-Pristina dialogue could be resumed in two or three months, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Monday.

“We want the dialogue to be serious and lead to a compromise solution. Serbia is ready for compromise, but it is not and will never be ready to humiliate itself and its people. And its people in Kosovo and the people as a whole. We have never emphasized any extreme demands, or something we know nobody will accept, that’s why we mentioned a compromise,” Vucic said after meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State and the special representative for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer.

Vucic said he had “open and honest” talks with Palmer.

“We have considered all of the disputed issues, all the differences between us, and we are determined to find solutions that would also mean better US and Serbian relations. One of the important things is improving bilateral relations with the US and I take the opportunity to invite President Donald Trump once again to visit Serbia. No US president since Jimmy Carter back in 1980 has visited Serbia and that would be a strong impetus to the development of our relations,” said Vucic, who has used meetings with US officials several times before to invite Trump to visit Serbia.

Neither Vucic nor Palmer, however, said anything about what the Serbian president had told the US diplomat regarding statements he made in Skopje and Pristina, which were received with unhappiness in Belgrade.

Instead, Vucic said that he “will not speak about the details in public out of politeness to the guest and because of diplomatic rules.”

During the talks, however, these differences in attitudes were clearly expressed, Vucic said.

“As Palmer said to me what the United States did not like about Serbian politics. He answered me, I answered him. I think we have clarified many things,” he said.

In any case, Serbia will not enter into conflicts with America because it would “show naivety and stupidity,” Vucic said while thanking Palmer for US support for Serbia’s ambitions to join the EU.

Speaking about the situation in Kosovo, Palmer said that it was important to respect the results of the October elections and that it was quite clear that the Serb List had won the support of the vast majority of the Serbs in Kosovo and the right to be represented in the government.

When asked to comment the Self-determination (Vetevendosje) movement leader Albin Kurti’s statement that he would not invite Serbs from the Serb List into the government, Palmer said it was important for Kosovo Serbs to have the opportunity to express themselves not only openly in public but also through the political process.

Commenting on the same question, Vucic said that “Americans prefer” Serbian politicians from Kosovo who belong to other parties, because they are ready to accept independence of Kosovo, but “what matters is that Palmer said: the Serb List won more than 90% of the vote [of Kosovo Serbs] and it must be in the government if it wants to, and their constitution says so.”

Speaking in Serbian, Palmer also said that the European Union’s decision not to set a date for the start of the accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania is “a historic mistake”.

“In our view, this is a historical mistake and a bad message to the region,” Palmer said, stating “America wants a European perspective for the Western Balkans and will work on persuading EU leaders into it before the summit in Zagreb, in May next year.
