Vucic for Der Standard: We will not recognize Kosovo in its current borders

In an interview for Vienna-based Standard Vucic excluded a possibility for Belgrade to recognize Kosovo in its current borders and added that it was unlikely that Belgrade would recognize Kosovo at all.

He said that it was not very probable for Belgrade to recognize Kosovo, even though he allegedly heard from the USA that the EU changed its view and could ask recognition from Belgrade.

“We want to see what they (Pristina negotiators) say and why they say something. Of course, we also want to hear what the EU has to say. So far, the EU did not set any pre-conditions to Serbia. However, we heard from the Americans that this could be changing, but we would like to hear that from our European partners. I cannot exclude that the EU would ask for recognition, but this did not happen so far”, he explained.

Vucic said that the idea of the EU was an agreement between the two Germanys, without formal recognition by Belgrade, which would be simpler for Serbia.

About an unsuccessful attempt to change the Constitution in order to improve the independence of the judiciary, Vucic said that this would be implemented.

“We must see what we are going to do with Kosovo. For both issues, a referendum is needed in order to change the Constitution, and we cannot have two referendums in one year. A turnout of more than 50 percent is necessary for a successful referendum. Just two to three percent of voters would go out and vote in a referendum on judiciary reform”, he said.

At the statement that Kosovo was included in the Constitution as a part of Serbia and that it was questionable if a change or an agreement regarding this would be possible, Vucic said that he would do everything in order to reach an agreement because this would secure the future of the nation.
