Vucic gets Complaints in Davos about Serbia Buying Russian Weapons

The biggest complaint that he was addressed at the World Economic Forum was why Serbia was arming and in doing so, they are buying the Russian weapons, President AleksandarVucic said on Tuesday in Davos adding that to such inquiries he retorted “rather firmly and convincingly” with the explanation that the weapons were bought only for defensive purposes and that the country could afford the latest Russian systems S-300 and S-400 - but they did not buy it.

“We are not buying the offensive weapons and it is not just us buying from the Russians. We do not want to be of trivial significance and easy prey for someone as we used to be”, Vucic told the Serbian media reporters conveying his impressions from the debates in which he participated during the day.

Vucic also said that he pointed out that Serbia had been involved in the process of the European integration for 20 years now, but they could still not get an answer what were the prospects to be admitted into the European Union if a negotiated solution with Kosovo was reached.

“I did not get a direct answer”, he said.

Vucic had a series of bilateral meetings in Davos, among others with the US National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien, to whom he once again conveyed the often-repeated wish to host the US President Donald Trump in Serbia.

“I told [O'Brien] that Serbia was the only country not only in the region but also beyond that supported the election of Trump” for president, he said.

Vucic also said that in the next two weeks he expected the US Special Presidential Envoy for Serbia and Kosovo Richard Grenell to visit Belgrade.

Vucic had informal meetings with President of Poland Andrzej Duda and President of Lithuania GitanasNauseda as well as with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.

The meeting with Plenkovic was “open and friendly”, Vucic told Serbian reporters.
