Vucic-Hoti Meeting in Washington Moved to September 4

Vucic-Hoti Meeting in Washington Moved to September 4

The meeting of the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia Abdullah Hoti and Aleksandar Vucic has been postponed for September 4, with conflicting statements from Belgrade ranging from claims that the recognition of Kosovo’s independence will certainly not be on the agenda, to the statement that in 1999 Serbia signed “partial capitulation” and that “it cannot behave as though nothing happened”, as Vucic said.

National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot confirmed for Kosovo media that the meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Hoti and Serbian President Vucic has been moved from September 2 to September 4 because of the agenda.

Media in Serbia and Kosovo had previously announced that the meeting would be postponed a few days.

Vucic, who also on two occasions announced the possibility that the date of the meeting in Washington might be moved, said that in the event that “something important happens”, it will also be attended by US President Donald Trump.

“Negotiations on all key issues regarding normalization - not recognition - are being conducted under the auspices of Brussels, and this has to be something else,” Vucic told TV Prva.

Despite this, Vucic said that Serbia must act in accordance with what has happened since 1999.

“We have to understand how difficult the position is and how many trumps we don’t have in up our sleeve. At the same time, we have to take care of the safety of the people in Kosovo and all other residents of the country. Our vital interest is the preservation of the peace,” Vucic said.

He said that Albanians anyway “don’t want to talk about the economy” in Washington.

“For us, it is no problem to discuss anything. But we won’t accept for someone to offer us support for European integration in exchange for recognizing Kosovo. We respect that, but come out with something that is a serious offer,” he said.

He added that it is obvious that Brussels and Washington are struggling to solve the Kosovo problem, but that he is making an effort not to anger anyone and that he doesn’t want to refuse an invitation to the White House.

When asked about the issue of the road construction near the Visoki Decani monastery, Vucic said that he would certainly raise that issue at the meeting with Pristina representatives in Brussels on September 7, but that he doesn’t know whether that will be discussed at the upcoming meeting in Washington.
