Vucic: I Couldn’t Care Less What Others Think of Our Close Relations with

Serbia has four chapters ready for opening in the accession talks with the European Union, but at the moment it is not realistic to expect that more than one will be opened at the next EU summit, President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said on Monday.

“I do not know whether the EU will open one, perhaps not a single chapter, maybe sometimes even two, and we have four prepared for opening, but we are not at that level for all four to be opened so that it will be from zero to two, realistically - one. That is as much as we deserve”, said Vucic in a sarcastic tone addressing the journalists after talks with the leader of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament Manfred Weber and the EP rapporteur on Serbia Vladimir Bilcik.

Continuing in the same tone, Vucic stated that it seemed that Serbia would from the 17 chapters opened so far “jump” to 18, which is “of historical importance for our country”.

Underlining that it was important to him that Serbia continued on its “European path”, he said that “he only wanted to hear whether they want Serbia in Europe or not”.

“If it were up to Weber, I know that [the EU] would want us, since he has a clear vision of Europe”, remarked Vucic.

“We shall thus follow their synchronization [within the EU on the future status of candidate countries for membership], observe the path it is moving on, and fulfill our obligations. And I am counting that, in three years or so – when they open up another four chapters for us – then we shall cross the number of 20 [opened chapters] and this will be of great importance for our country”, Vucic added.

In an even more belligerent manner, Vucic said that he “couldn’t care less what others thought” about Serbia continuing to nurture close relations with Russia and China.

“I am in fits of laughter when they tell me to diminish cooperation with Russia and China, and their delegations annually go to them fifteen times or so for the purpose of trade”, said Vucic, adding that he would not suffer anyone’s interference on how Serbia should act.

“I will not allow being lectured by those who have one thousand times more exchange with China”, he said.

“Therefore, you bet I will see” the Russian and Chinese officials, continued Vucic, adding that an official confirmation had arrived in Belgrade that the Chinese President Xi Jiping would visit Serbia next year.
