Vucic to MPs: Serbia Must Hide Its True Intentions Regarding Kosovo

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic succeeded in holding a speech lasting nearly three hours in the Serbian parliament on Monday afternoon without actually mentioning anything new that he had already said in many and almost everyday TV appearances in recent months and years.

Vucic said that he could not speak in detail about Serbia’s plans regarding Belgrade and Pristina negotiations, although they are reportedly thoroughly elaborated, comparing the situation in negotiations with the lost position in a game of chess (see V.I.P. No 6612).

“Therefore, we cannot openly discuss our next moves, but we must hide the true intentions,” Vucic said.

Vucic reiterated that the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina will not resume unless Kosovo lifts tariffs on goods from Serbia, and reiterated again that in the event of resumed negotiations, he would advocate for a compromise solution to the Kosovo crisis, which according to him implies delimitation or change of borders.

He came clear, however, that this is almost impossible, because of the resistance of the many western countries to such a solution and that way practically presented his policy in the near future as a policy of endless delays.

The session was not attended by representatives of the opposition, not including the representatives of the parties who have indirectly cooperated with Vucic’s regime for a long time - the MPs of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), as well as MPs of the Party of Modern Serbia (SMS).

“Two solutions for Kosovo”: Vucic also said that there are only two solutions for Kosovo, one is to reach a compromise in which neither party would feel like a complete winner or loser, and the other is to keep the situation at the level of “frozen conflict”.

“It should be borne in mind that in the case of ‘freezing’, Serbia depends on how much Kosovo will respect the freezing, and they constantly show that they want to take complete control of the territories where the Serbs live,” Vucic said.

The Serbian president openly threatened that Serbia would intervene militarily “if the Serbs in Kosovo are physically threatened,” emphasizing that the Serbian Armed Forces (VS) are now much stronger than it used to be in the past 20 years.

He said that if a compromise solution is reached, the people will definitely have to voice their stance on the issue in a referendum, as well as that, unlike other countries [alluding to North Macedonia], in Serbia, the decision of the people will be binding.

Vucic also promised (again) that in the event that the decision of the people in a referendum is different from his proposal, he would resign and withdraw from politics.
