Vucic: We Cannot Recognize Kosovo Independence without Getting Anything in

Belgrade and Pristina have to achieve a compromise since it cannot be expected of Serbia to recognize Kosovo and on the other hand for it to get nothing in return, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said, in an interview to the Italian agency ANSA on the occasion of the upcoming visit of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to Serbia, on Wednesday.

Vucic also said that the issue of the change of borders was a controversial matter, since not everyone recognized the same borders, depending on whether they had recognized the independence of Kosovo or not.

“Unlike the Kosovo leaders who every day deceive their citizens with unrealistic promises that Pristina will get everything and Belgrade nothing, it is my duty to explain to the Serbs the importance of a compromise (with Pristina) which does not represent a defeat but rather a victory. A victory for the future of Serbia”, Vucic said.

He denied that he had ever had secret meetings with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, as some media claim, and described as “outright lies” the allegations on the existence of a draft of the final agreement between Belgrade and Pristina.
