"Vucic Will Eventually Have to Negotiate with Opposition"

The civic protests in Belgrade have from the very beginning had a “benign demand” – fair election conditions – and it is, therefore, unclear why President Aleksandar Vucic is refusing to talk with the representatives of the protests’ organizers and of opposition parties, said political analyst Cvijetin Milivojevic on Tuesday.

“The main political demand in Belgrade was, unlike at the protests in the towns across Serbia, too benign. “[The protestors] have long ago demanded that equal conditions for the elections be secured. This is too mild a request so as to animate a greater mass of people who would turn out on the streets each week”, Milivojevic said for N1 TV.

The authorities have, however, reacted counterproductively for themselves to this modest request, he said.

“I do not think that the opposition should remind Vucic of the election conditions, these are, I hope, normal things. What is the problem here [that fair election conditions are demanded]? It is a classic fallacy, when [Vucic] says that [the opposition] is attempting to bring down the state”, Milivojevic said.

Unlike Belgrade, the protestors across the country have much more specific demands which concern the questions of importance for local communities, which “concern and animate all the citizens”, he said.

In recent weeks, however, the protests in Belgrade have also been “localized”, in the sense that new demands are posed concerning matters of broader importance for the citizens, Milivojevic said.

“We have seen also in Belgrade in the past weeks these new demands, such as the banning of the cutting down of trees at Kalemegdan Fortress and at Usce, which is where the most expensive gondola in the world is supposed to be made. And these are demands which animate the citizens”, he said.

In any case, sooner or later the establishment of a dialogue between the authorities and the opposition is inevitable, and all that takes place in the meantime is “pure waste of time”, Milivojevic said.
