Discontent erupts, Durrës' PS clashes with Rama: People are driving us

Edi Rama is seeking eight mandates on May 11 from the Durrës Region, the same number he received in the 2021 elections. However, the developments that have occurred over the past four years in this region, the mismanagement of local and central institutions, as well as the catapult of people who have no connection to Durrës to key leadership positions, have caused dissatisfaction among the socialist base.

Voxnews.al sources claim that the dissatisfaction of the base erupted earlier this week, when at a meeting of the party branch, attended by Edi Rama himself, the leader of the Socialists in this region made it clear that the objective he had set for 8 mandates was unattainable.

"The objective set by you in Durrës is not being achieved, because we are being driven out, they are not accepting us," the leader of the Durrës SP, Luan Zaza, is reported to have declared at this meeting. His statement caused a counter-reaction from Rama, who asked him for explanations as to why this objective is not being achieved.

But the culmination of the opposition to the socialist leader was not this statement. The culmination was the words of a coordinator of the Socialist Party with two decades of contribution to the party. Quoting a speech by former US President Theodore Roosevelt, he diplomatically conveyed to Edi Rama the concern of the people of Durrës for the catapulting of people from outside the district into key positions in the central and local administration, the cost of whose misgovernment is paid for by the local structures of the Socialist Party.

"While we were waiting to take our seats on stage, I remembered the part The Man in the Arena, "The Man in the Arena" from Theodore Roosevelt's "Citizenship in a Republic" speech, which I am reading for everyone: Merit belongs to the man who is really on stage, whose face is stained with dust, sweat and blood; who tries bravely; who makes mistakes; who fails, because there is no effort without mistakes and shortcomings. But, the one who really tries his best in his work, the one who knows enthusiasm and dedication, the one who exhausts himself for a worthy cause, who at best in the end appreciates the triumph of achievement and at worst, if he fails, at least fails by daring hard. So, his place can never be with those indifferent and cowardly people who have never known either victory or defeat," said the socialist coordinator.

The socialist coordinator linked this speech by one of the greatest American presidents to the electoral situation in Durrës. He told Edi Rama to his face that in Durrës, the export of 'Kap ça të Kapësh' directors from Tirana and other districts has alienated the Socialist Party from its base.

"I want to repeat a concern, which I also expressed at the 'Tropical' meeting before the 2021 elections, the concern about directors "exported" to Durrës from Tirana or districts that have become "KÇK", in positions from their brother, minister, friend, who have nothing to do with the "Electoral Scene" in Durrës, or their duties in the SP! They don't want the "KÇK" that you bring to Durrës to know that you are the SP coordinator, SP Chairman or whatever you are. Those who wait for you and solve your problem are few. Durrës has had and still has very good leaders, even those who have carried very difficult electoral areas on their backs, so you don't have to bring "KÇK" from Tirana when we take care of the votes here", he continued.

The socialist coordinator did not leave Edi Rama himself without responsibility, who in 2021 became a deputy in this district.

"In Durrës in 2021 you came 8th and we gave you as much as you wanted. You asked for 8, you got 8! Also 15871 votes as a deputy, despite the 11412 votes you got in Vlora! And everything I said above is related to the expectations that the Durrës PS membership had from you as a District Deputy and Prime Minister! And to conclude, the current situation in Durrës fits the popular expression 'who eats plums and whose teeth get numb'", said the local socialist official.

The coordinator's speech embarrassed Edi Rama, who asked for specific names of directors and officials in institutions who are not doing their job and are not responding to people's concerns.

The response he received from the coordinator was that “KÇK are all without exception.” The coordinator said that the citizens of Durrës were being driven out and brought up as an example the efforts to meet with those affected by the recent floods. “Now that they went about the floods, they have thrown them out,” he said.
