Berisha to businessmen: We will do everything to ensure that this country

The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, participated in a meeting of the Tirana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where the drafting of a new platform for the sustainable economic development of the country was discussed.

During his speech, Berisha emphasized that Albania has suffered a significant decline in production over the last three years, with a 32 percent decrease in exports from 2023 to 2024.

He has criticized the current economic policy and has declared as a priority of the DP program the resumption of national production, guaranteeing support for entrepreneurs and promoting a more competitive and qualitative economy.

"I take this opportunity to greet all Albanian businessmen, who in my opinion, carry out their activities in difficult conditions like in no other country. The Albania of the last three years is the Albania of the dramatic decline in production. It is the Albania in which, from one semester to the next, industrial production falls. Exports from 2023-2024 have decreased by 32 percent, this is official statistics.

Exports from one month to the next this year continue to fall. Agricultural production marked a dramatic decline. So, we are moving towards an economy that is today supported by two main pillars. It is supported by construction and, in one way or another, by tourism. But history has proven that even the most powerful economies on the planet, when supported by two pillars, have known very deep crises. This is precisely why we have declared Made in Albania, national production as a national pride. I guarantee you and all entrepreneurs that we will do everything so that this country produces as much as possible, with as much quality and as much competitiveness as possible.

We have declared and are convinced that the alpha and omega of our program must be the economy, the economy, the economy. This terrible hole that is being created in this country by the massive departure of Albanians has the economy, the economy, the economy at its core. Mr. Jakaj presented some of the most serious concerns here and I am taking the construction sector. He showed that in this sector, taxes have increased 10 and 12-fold. Who pays these dear citizens? You pay these. The government decides for the builders, the builders are obliged to reflect them in the prices of housing. They either turn into forbidden apples, or you have to work for decades to buy an apartment.

"The second sector that is held, which is a powerful sector and Albania has a very large potential and far from being exploited to the appropriate extent, is tourism. But in the government's estimate, 10 million tourists with 7 million overnight stays, shows that in this sector, if we compare it with Montenegro, which receives 2.7 million tourists per year, we have an informality of 80 percent. This informality is directly reflected in the ordinary citizen, because the ordinary citizen benefits from the sale in this sector a total of 7-8 million euros in the state budget, at a time when this citizen spends 430 million euros on this sector every year,"  said Berisha.
