Decision by the EC Monitoring Committee, Association of Local Elected Officials:

The Association of Local Elected Officials of Albania has welcomed the decision of the Monitoring Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe to accelerate the process of monitoring local government in Albania.

This is because opposition councilors, through a letter addressed to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, raised concerns that the autonomy of local government has been violated, and the role of the Municipal Council has been marginalized, avoiding decision-making in the Municipality of Tirana. 

According to the association under the presidency of Fisnik Qosja, the decision taken by the Committee on March 25 to conduct this monitoring earlier than planned is a clear indication of the attention and seriousness with which the Congress approaches concerns over violations of local autonomy and respect for the European Charter of Local Self-Government.

"The Association of Local Elected Officials of Albania welcomes the decision of the Monitoring Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe to accelerate the process of monitoring local government in Albania.

The decision taken by the Committee on 25 March to carry out this monitoring earlier than planned is a clear indication of the attention and seriousness with which the Congress approaches our concerns about violations of local autonomy and respect for the European Charter of Local Self-Government.

Our association had reacted with concern a few days ago to the Prime Minister's anti-constitutional and illegal act of usurping the leadership of the Municipality of Tirana!

We thank Congress and international institutions for acknowledging our concerns and look forward to the monitoring mission with great interest.

"This step is essential for strengthening local government, making it more independent, transparent and in line with European standards ," the announcement by the Association of Local Elected Officials of Albania states.
