BBC: Germany "throws" history behind it and prepares for war

The German military, the Bundeswehr , has launched a massive investment plan after the German parliament voted to lift defense spending limits and strict debt rules. The policy change comes as international tensions, including the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, have led many analysts to predict a potential for further escalation of conflicts in Europe.

A senior German general, Carsten Breuer, has told the BBC that increased military spending is urgently needed, as he believes Russian aggression will not stop in Ukraine. He has expressed concern that NATO must be prepared for a possible attack by Russia within four years, saying: “We are threatened by Russia. We are threatened by Putin. We must do everything necessary to prevent that.”

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has profoundly changed thinking in Germany, where for decades many Germans rejected military power because of their role as aggressors in World War II. Markus Ziener of the German Marshall Fund in Berlin explains that, despite the passage of 80 years since the end of World War II, many Germans still emphasize the ideology of staying out of conflicts.

This new defense policy, as well as the need for a stronger and better prepared army, marks a major turning point in Germany's military history, which now aims to secure a strong position in the face of potential threats from Russia.
