The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) – which is supported by the United States and Israel – has failed in its humanitarian mission, the United Nations said on June 13.

The UN and other major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the GHF over concerns that the foundation is designed to aid Israel's military goals.

"The GHF, frankly, has been, from a humanitarian perspective, a failure," said Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN humanitarian aid agency, OCHA, during a press conference in Geneva.

"They are not doing what a humanitarian operation should do, which is to provide assistance to people where they are and in a safe manner."

Laerke added that the UN has the aid distribution operation ready and that they are waiting for Israel to give them permission to begin the distribution.

The GHF began operations on May 26, after Israel had cut off supplies to Gaza for more than two months, causing a severe shortage of supplies.

GHF claimed to have distributed almost 2.6 million meals on Thursday alone and over 18.6 million since it began operations.

The war in Gaza began in October 2023, when Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union – attacked Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping nearly 250 others.

Israel has vowed to continue the war until Hamas is destroyed and the remaining hostages are returned.

As a result of the Israeli offensive, more than 55,000 people have been killed in the Palestinian territory and the UN has warned that almost the entire population of the territory is on the brink of famine. /REL
