International Atomic Energy Agency: Iran's main nuclear plants not hit

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog, said three nuclear plants in Iran were not affected by the Israeli attacks, citing Iranian officials.

The nuclear systems at Fordow, Isfahan and Bushehr have not been affected, the IAEA said, adding that its Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi had been in contact with Iranian officials.

The country's largest nuclear facility, Natanz, was confirmed to have been hit, with video and images showing plumes of smoke rising from the facility. No increase in radiation levels was observed there, the IAEA said.

Fordow and Natanz are both underground facilities. Fordow is located about 20 miles northeast of the city of Qom, while Natanz is about 150 miles south of the capital Tehran.

Iran has spent years strengthening its nuclear facilities against the threat of military attacks, which would make it difficult to comprehensively destroy them, military experts told CNN.

The facilities use a specialized hardened concrete - and some of the underground locations are connected by tunnels with 90-degree turns, adding another layer of complexity, experts said.
