Israel attacks Iran, targets nuclear plants and military commanders

Israel has launched dozens of airstrikes against military targets inside Iran, including its nuclear facilities.

Israel attacked Iran's capital early Friday, killing at least two senior military officers in the attack, raising the potential for an all-out war between the two Middle Eastern adversaries.

Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared a state of emergency in the country and warned citizens to prepare for a "rocket and drone attack" in retaliation.

The attacks came amid rising tensions over Iran's rapidly advancing nuclear program and seemed certain to provoke retaliation, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warning that "severe punishment" would be meted out to Israel. Israel said Iran had launched drones in an initial response.

The attack hit several sites, including Iran's main nuclear enrichment facility, where black smoke could be seen rising into the air.

It appears this was the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq.
