"Only the municipality of Vlora is responsible", Dredha debates with

The Mayor of Vlora, Ermal Dredha, responded to the statement of the former Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, Ornela Çuçi, who said in Opinion that "only the municipality is responsible" for the fire in the waste field in Vlora.

Through a Skype connection, Dredha said that the waste field in the coastal city has been serving as a landfill for over 40 years and that he has encountered this disturbing phenomenon since the first day he took office.

"Don't throw accusations in the air, because it harms Vlora. It's all a colossal job. We need to understand one thing, that waste field has been used for 40 or so years and it is beyond capacity. The biggest fight we have had, at least since I took this job, has been the legal part, to put the landfill into operation. All urban waste goes to the Sherishta landfill, since April 26, 2025.

It is a very big job, because there has been a legal impasse. There are also people who are withdrawing, this is to be congratulated because it is not a small thing. I mentioned it not without purpose, because we have a project with the German bank, which foresees that the third phase is the encapsulation of the landfill. This is utopian to think about, let alone declare.

"Who is it that sets fire to their own landfill?! There are all those people fighting the flames, while there is methane gas from the waste. It is beyond any imagination that a local institution could do this. The fire was only two hours old, but it was extinguished immediately. Normally there is smoke. On social media it appeared as if the fire had lasted five days ," said the mayor of Vlora.
