Skrapar/ Plague of small ruminants spreads, 263 cattle affected in the village

The plague of small ruminants has affected two farms in the village of Polenë in Skrapar, infecting a total of 263 cattle, 191 on one farm and 72 on the other. The news was announced by the Head of the Veterinary Sector at the Directorate of Agriculture of the Berat district, Ilirjan Ramaj, who stated that strict measures were immediately taken to prevent the further spread of the disease.

"Both farms have been quarantined. A 'red zone' with a radius of 3 km has been defined and checkpoints have been set up with the help of the Police, to stop any movement of small animals. It is strictly forbidden to take them from one farm to another or to pastures," said Ramaj.

According to him, in cooperation with the veterinary service, an inventory of farms in the area has been launched, while a 10 km perimeter around the infection center has been placed under enhanced monitoring. It is expected that the process of eliminating affected animals will begin in the coming days, based on an official order to be issued by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Peste des petits ruminants is a highly contagious disease that affects only animals and is spread through direct contact between them. It manifests with watery eyes, diarrhea, high fever up to 42 degrees, sores in the mouth, and leads to death within a few days.

In this situation, Ramaj has called on all farmers in the Berat region to be cautious and immediately notify veterinary authorities if they notice suspicious symptoms in their livestock. He has also asked them to stop any form of animal movement, as migration at this stage could further spread the disease.
