Attacked on March 23, Red Cross: We are outraged by the killing of 8 doctors in

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said it was “outraged” by the killing of eight doctors on duty in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The nine-member team was attacked on March 23, the IFRC said, and their bodies were recovered on Sunday after access to the scene was denied for a week. One doctor is still missing.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said the bodies of its staff were discovered along with those of six members of the Gaza Civil Defense Agency - run by Hamas, a terrorist organization designated by the US and other powers - as well as a UN employee.

They did not say who opened fire on the convoy, but Hamas blamed the Israel Defense Forces for the attack. In a statement released Sunday, the IFRC said the eight bodies of the PRCS workers were recovered “ after seven days of silence.”

The Israel Defense Forces did not publicly comment on the Red Cross and Red Crescent statement. The AFP news agency reported that the Israeli army admitted on Saturday that it had fired on the ambulances in southern Gaza last Sunday after identifying them as “suspicious vehicles.”

Israeli troops “opened fire on Hamas vehicles and eliminated several Hamas terrorists,” the army said in a statement to AFP. The army added that “ after an initial investigation, it was determined that some of the suspicious vehicles were ambulances and fire trucks.”

Israel resumed its military offensive in Gaza on March 18, after the first phase of a ceasefire that began in January ended, while negotiations for a second phase of the deal stalled. More than 900 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since then, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said.

The war began when Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. Israel responded with a massive military offensive, killing more than 50,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry./ REL
