The European Commission presented today in Brussels a new draft for the European Internal Security Strategy, which aims to strengthen the role of the European Police Office (Europol) and other key agencies in addressing security threats within the European Union. The draft, presented by Executive Vice-President Henna Virkunen and Commissioner for Home Affairs Markus Brunner, highlights the need for a new approach in the fight against organised crime and terrorism, as well as addressing the challenges posed by hybrid and cyber threats.

One of the key points of the strategy is to strengthen international cooperation, including Europol, Eurojust and the European Public Prosecutor's Office, to better tackle illegal migrant smuggling and terrorism. The Commission also proposes to strengthen access to encrypted data from apps such as WhatsApp and Signal, to support cross-border investigations and ensure more effective law enforcement.

According to the Commission, this strategy also aims to improve cybersecurity, protect cloud services and telecommunications, and increase preparedness to deal with chemical, biological and nuclear threats. In this context, the strategy provides a comprehensive response to internal security challenges and underlines the importance of updating legal instruments to ensure the protection of the rights of European citizens, while respecting privacy and the security of personal data.
