Be careful with medications: Some of them can harm your sex life

Many of the medications we use every day, whether prescription or over-the-counter, can cause common side effects like dizziness or stomach upset. But what's often overlooked is the impact they can have on sex lives, for both men and women.

Sexual side effects are varied and may include:

Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection

Vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse

Difficulty achieving orgasm

What medications can affect your sexuality?

According to experts, the most common groups of drugs associated with such effects are:

High blood pressure medications, including diuretics and alpha/beta blockers

H2 antagonists, used for reflux and ulcers

Antiepileptic drugs, which affect nerve functions

Some medications for Parkinson's disease

Antidepressants and mental health medications, especially those of the SSRI class and antipsychotics

Antihistamines and decongestants, used for colds and allergies

Hormonal drugs, for the treatment of prostate or breast cancer

Hair loss medications (oral), which can decrease libido and worsen sperm quality

If you notice changes in your sex life that coincide with starting a new medication, don't ignore this sign. Talk to your doctor right away. In many cases, your doctor can change your treatment or recommend an alternative without such side effects.

Caution: Never stop taking medication without your doctor's advice, even if you think it's affecting your sexual function. Self-medication or abrupt discontinuation can worsen your condition.
