BIRN: Brataj and Fevziu victims of a 'deepfake' on Facebook

Since Monday, a video created with the help of applications that use Artificial Intelligence has been circulating on Facebook, which misuses the image of the head of the National Emergency, Skënder Brataj, and journalist Blendi Fevziu.

In the manipulated video, Fevziu appears reporting on a physical attack on Brataj, allegedly carried out by the "pharmaceutical mafia", after the latter had shared a video talking about the positive effects of a cream, which promises to cure a long list of diseases.

Of course, nothing said in this video is true.

Contacted by BIRN, Dr. Brataj said he was concerned, as such misleading materials have been circulating on social media for months.

"It is a concern especially for patients who come to the QKUM [National Emergency Medical Center] to seek treatment, " Brataj said, adding that " it is a very big problem."

He added that he responds to concerned citizens who write to him on social media every day and that he has reported these posts to Facebook several times. However, his efforts have not stopped the distribution of the videos, although he has also activated the cybercrime sector in the State Police.

"It's very worrying, because people trust these videos," Brataj explained.

"A man from Lezha, over 70 years old, came to me a few days ago, in the middle of the heat. The guy from Italy had explained to him that it was a scam, but he insisted on hearing it from me too," he said.

According to him, experts have informed him that the publishers of these videos are not located in Albania.

Journalist Blendi Fevziu, host of the "Opinion" show on TV Klan, also expressed concern about the video circulating on Facebook and described the case as "scandalous".

"It is pure and dangerous manipulation, because it can negatively affect the health of citizens," he said./BIRN
