Temperatures above 40 degrees, France closes nuclear plants and schools

French state-owned energy company EDF has shut down its Golfech nuclear power plant in the south of the country in response to extreme heat in the area.

"The shutdown was carried out to prevent overheating of the Garonne River, from which the power plant receives cooling water," EDF said today.

The heatwave in France, with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees Celsius, is expected to continue until midweek. Nearly 200 schools have also been closed in France due to the heatwave.
