German top diplomat: Putin wants Ukraine to capitulate

Russian President Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine to surrender, Germany's top diplomat Johann Wadephul said during a visit to Kiev, as Russia has intensified its bombing of the neighboring country in recent weeks.

This is the first visit by German Foreign Minister Wadephul since he took office last month.

Amid stalled talks to end the three-year war, “Putin is not backing down from any of his maximalist demands – he doesn’t want negotiations, he wants capitulation,” Wadephul said during an unannounced visit to Kiev.

"The freedom and independence of Ukraine are the most important task of our foreign and security policy," the statement issued by the German Foreign Ministry said.

Russia "is counting on the weakening of our support and wants invasion and annexation at all costs, even at the cost of thousands of lives," he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the United States and Western allies to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses after Russian attacks on June 29 included hundreds of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

Germany is Ukraine's biggest supporter in Europe and second in the world after the United States, providing weapons and other aid to Kiev to push back Russian forces./ REL
