Alarm from the Philippines: Albania, a growing destination for labor trafficking

The trafficking of Filipino workers to Albania is experiencing a worrying increase, the Philippine Bureau of Immigration warns.

Just on June 28, 2024, three Filipino citizens were stopped at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) after attempting to travel to Malaysia - a trip that had Albania as its final destination.

Initially they claimed to be tourists, but later discovered that they had fallen prey to a trafficking scheme and were promised jobs in Albania as domestic helpers, factory workers, and waitresses.

According to authorities, each of them had paid up to 100,000 Philippine pesos to suspicious recruiters, who had contacted them via Facebook. After the money was transferred, the recruiters disappeared, leaving the victims without documentation and without any instructions on what to do next.

"We are facing a significant increase in attempted trafficking into Albania. These are not isolated cases," said Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado.

Authorities have notified the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) to further investigate the criminal networks behind these cases and to stop the flow of human trafficking towards Europe, including Albania.
