Europe on heatwave alert, temperatures reach 42 degrees!

Southern Europe is facing a severe heatwave, which has engulfed France, Spain, Italy and Portugal, causing extreme temperatures and an increased risk of massive wildfires, writes The Guardian.

In France, temperatures have reached 38°C and are expected to reach 40°C in some areas near the Mediterranean. Authorities have issued an orange alert in some regions and warned of very hot nights, with the thermometer not expected to drop below 20°C. The municipality of Marseille has opened public swimming pools for free and has offered cold rooms to citizens, while in Nice, fans are being distributed to schools and elderly people living alone.

In Italy, 17 cities have been placed on red alert, including Milan, Bologna, Turin, Naples and Palermo, with temperatures reaching 39°C. On Sunday, the number of cities on alert is expected to reach 21. Regions such as Liguria and Sicily have banned outdoor work during rush hour.

In Spain, several regions are on orange alert, as temperatures could reach up to 42°C, especially in the southwest and northeast of the country. According to Spanish authorities, this could be the first official heatwave of the summer.

In Portugal, two-thirds of the country will be placed on an orange alert tomorrow. Temperatures of up to 42°C are expected in Lisbon, while authorities have issued warnings of a high risk of fires.

According to forecasts, the heatwave is expected to last at least until Tuesday, with authorities across the region calling for increased caution, especially for children, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.
