Ukraine seeks Zelensky-Putin meeting after talks on humanitarian issues

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov has stated that Ukraine intends to request a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, immediately after the current negotiations on humanitarian issues are concluded.

In a statement to reporters, Umerov said that Ukraine remains committed to peace and supports the United States' proposal for a general ceasefire.

Peace negotiations have been underway since the beginning of the year, with the first public mention of a ceasefire coming from former US President Donald Trump in January. So far, the talks have taken place in several stages and locations, including Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, where Ukraine and the US outlined the initial principles of an agreement.

Communication with Russia has been indirect, through American mediation. In March, the US formally proposed a general ceasefire on land, sea and air, to which Ukraine agreed. However, Russia refused to compromise, and the only concrete result was a temporary halt to attacks on energy infrastructure.

Negotiations then continued in Turkey, without the presence of the US, where the focus was on three issues: a complete ceasefire, humanitarian measures such as prisoner exchanges and the return of children, and a possible trilateral summit between Zelensky, Putin, and Trump.

Despite efforts, the latest rounds did not bring an agreement, due to Moscow's unacceptable demands, according to the Ukrainian side.

"Ukraine does not seek a respite for new aggression, but a just peace," Umerov stressed, adding that for three years Ukraine has meticulously implemented a prisoner exchange program and has been consistent on humanitarian issues.
