Cleanliness is a personal matter and the frequency with which one practices it on a daily basis depends on the individual. For some, it is a daily habit right after waking up, while for others it is not that important.

Most of us think we know our bodies well and know when it needs cleaning.

However, recent online discussions have called into question some common beliefs. Over the past few years, celebrities and social media users have fueled public debate over how often we should shower, and how exactly we should do so.

According to experts, there is no exact scientific rule that determines when we should shower, it depends mainly on personal preference.

“Showering is more of a lifestyle issue than a medical necessity,” Dr. Angela Lamb, director of the Dermatology Faculty Practice at Westside Mount Sinai, tells Shop TODAY.

Dr. Mary Stevenson, a dermatologic surgeon and associate professor at NYU Langone Health, adds that the frequency of washing depends on various factors such as skin type, age, and level of physical activity.

“In general,” she says, “you should shower or cleanse your skin every two to three days.” But if you exercise or engage in activities that cause heavy sweating, more frequent showers become necessary.

What happens if you don't bathe enough? The main problem is unpleasant body odor.

According to Dr. Lamb, some people don't naturally produce strong body odor, so they can go longer without showering without being noticed.

Others may not feel the need to shower immediately even when an odor sets in. “Ultimately, how often we shower is closely tied to culture and social norms,” she says.

On the other hand, washing too frequently can cause problems.

Excessive showering can dry out the skin and damage its natural barrier.

“If you wash too often, you risk weakening the good microbes that protect your skin, which can make you more susceptible to infections,” warns Dr. Lamb.

According to her, washing several times a day is not a good idea/ newsbomb.gr
