A new variant of Covid will circulate during the summer, here are the symptoms

A new variant of Covid that is now replacing Nimbus is spreading more and more in Europe. Xfg, renamed Stratus by experts and considered more capable of evading antibodies, is being carefully monitored by the WHO. It will circulate throughout the summer and among the reported symptoms, hoarseness stands out.

Stratus may be able to evade the immune system more effectively than other variants.

In India, Stratus was the dominant variant of the spring. According to local media, Indian doctors have identified a symptom that seems to characterize it more: hoarseness. Unlike past waves in which loss of taste and smell were the hallmarks of the infection, patients are now complaining of a dry cough, irritation and sore throat, along with hoarseness.

Other symptoms, which come from reports in the UK, are a severe sore throat, and a very sharp pain when swallowing, often localized to the back of the throat. Other common symptoms, it is reported, are fatigue, mild cough, fever, muscle aches and congestion, given the high variability of Covid manifestations.

The rise of Stratus has affected all three WHO regions that consistently share Sars-CoV-2 sequences. In the European region, its presence has increased from 10.6% to 16.7%. In Southeast Asia, where Nimbus had been rapidly gaining ground in early spring, Stratus has increased from 17.3% to 68.7%.

The WHO insists on giving "priority to specific actions to best address uncertainties related to the flow and severity of antibodies".
