Albanians are abandoning their passports: Here's how many citizens

Not only are they emigrating, but more and more citizens are also giving up their Albanian passports. According to data from the Ministry of Interior, during the past year, nearly 900 Albanian citizens gave up their Albanian citizenship, thus registering the highest number ever.

Compared to 2023, this figure has increased by 6%, reflecting a growing trend of abandoning Albanian citizenship.

The main factor behind this phenomenon is that in some countries where Albanians emigrate, obtaining citizenship of the host country requires renouncing previous citizenship.

So, in order to obtain a passport from another country, such as to have easier access to social rights, employment, or travel, many Albanians are forced to leave their Albanian passport behind.

Ministry of Interior data shows that over the past 10 years, approximately 6,500 Albanian citizens have officially renounced Albanian citizenship.

Demographic profiling shows that most of them are young. According to data from the Institute of Statistics, individuals aged 15–35 make up more than half of those who have left the country and applied to live and work abroad.

Meanwhile, according to data from EUROSTAT, in the last 20 years, more than 521 thousand Albanian citizens have obtained citizenship of one of the European Union countries.

This is a clear indicator of the high rates of emigration and integration of Albanians into European societies, often sacrificing their citizenship of origin for new life opportunities./ Scan Tv
