Strong earthquake hits Myanmar, state of emergency declared

A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 has struck central Myanmar, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The epicenter was 16 km northwest of the city of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 km, sending strong tremors that were felt as far as southwest China and Thailand.

At least 70 construction workers are missing after an unfinished multi-story building collapsed hundreds of miles away in Bangkok.

There have been reports of road closures in the capital Naypyidaw and the country's military government has declared a state of emergency in six regions.

The earthquake struck near Mandalay, which has a population of about 1.5 million people.
