What is "vaccine tourism" and which European travel companies are offering this service?

Covid-19 has given birth to a new kind of tourism. Vaccine tourism, where travelers go abroad to get the vaccine, is being offered by tour operators across Europe.

Is it legal to travel to another country to be vaccinated? Are tour operators allowed to offer these types of trips? And with millions around the world waiting to be vaccinated, will locals lose the vaccine because supplies have been used by foreign tourists?

Norwegian travel agency World Visitor is offering the opportunity to be vaccinated in Russia. Customers, who can choose one of the many travel packages, all of which include receiving the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine.

For € 1,199 you can make two trips in one month, one for each dose. For € 2,999, customers can enjoy a luxurious 22-day stay at a Russian health resort, in order to receive both doses.

A third option involves a trip to a hotel in Turkey, which will soon be equipped with a vaccination center.

Travel from Germany and Austria

The German travel agency Fit Reisen (or "Fit Travel") started offering "vaccine holidays" or "Impfreisen" in February this year.

"We have received a growing number of customer inquiries as to whether it would not be possible to combine a health holiday with a Covid-19 vaccine," a Fit Reisen spokesman told Deutsche Welle.

Meanwhile, Austrian company Impfreisen.at is offering non-binding pre-bookings for a variety of comprehensive travel packages with "guaranteed access to anti-Covid vaccination".

Do governments support vaccine tourism?

Although there have been reports that vaccination with Sputnik V may be at the heart of a tourism program, starting this July, the Russian government has not officially given the green light for tourists to fly to get the vaccine there.
