German Finance Minister Kukies: Russia will not be readmitted to the G7!

Russia will not return to the G7 (the group of seven most industrialized countries in the world) as requested by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, said German Finance Minister Jörg Kukies.

"The G7 condemns very clearly Russia's war of aggression, especially on the third anniversary of Russia's brutal attack," Kukies said in an interview with Reuters news agency, adding that Trump's proposal would not secure the necessary unanimous support.

Kukies will travel to Cape Town on Tuesday for the G20 finance ministers' summit, while US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be absent due to other commitments. The current state of the global economy will be a key topic of the meetings.

"We really need to get back on the path of economic development ," Kukies said. Germany "has a lot of homework to do ," he added.

Kukies was appointed finance minister by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz in November after Scholz's governing coalition was ousted in a no-confidence vote, and is expected to serve in the post until a new government is formed following Sunday's election, which Friedrich Merz's conservatives won.

A trade war between the US and Europe can be avoided as both sides are willing to negotiate, Kukies said. "Nobody is interested in starting a trade war," he said.

The 27-member European Union could be hit particularly hard by Trump's plan for reciprocal tariffs, which aims to raise US tariffs on imports to bring them into line with tariffs and other taxes imposed by other countries.

Kukies also said that the G7 could discuss proposals to use $300 billion worth of Russian assets frozen in Europe for the reconstruction of Ukraine, "but the talks are just beginning. It's probably too early to say anything."/ REL
