Poland says it will no longer arm Ukraine

Poland said it will no longer arm Ukraine and instead of sending weapons there it will focus on its own defense. This clash between the two allies comes at a key moment in Kiev's counteroffensive against Russian forces.

After growing disagreements over grain exports from Ukraine, Poland summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to protest Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's statements at the United Nations.

The Ukrainian leader said that some countries are only pretending to support his country, which is aiming to retake territory occupied by Russia. Warsaw considered these statements offensive.

Poland has been one of Ukraine's staunchest supporters since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022. Warsaw is also one of Kiev's main arms suppliers.

Most of the weapons that the United States and other countries have sent to Ukraine have passed through Poland, which borders Ukraine.

Poland has also received about one million Ukrainian refugees who have benefited from various types of state aid.

Tensions between Warsaw and Kiev were fueled after Poland imposed a ban on Ukrainian grain imports, aiming to protect its farmers.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was asked on Wednesday whether his country would continue to support Kiev despite these disagreements.

"We will no longer transfer weapons to Ukraine, because we are now arming Poland with more modern weapons," said Morawiecki./REL
