Czech center-right opposition leader Petr Fiala has been named the country's new prime minister after the October legislative elections ousted billionaire Andrej Babis.

President Milos Zeman, who is in a wheelchair and suffers from COVID-19, led the unusual ceremony from his Prague residence, protected by a plastic barrier.

"I am convinced that we will soon have a strong and stable government," Fiala said.

Fiala's party joined a center-left Liberal coalition of the Pirate Party and STAN - a group of mayors and independent candidates - that came in third in the election.

The head of state was released from hospital on Thursday after being hospitalized on October 10, but had to return urgently after testing positive for coronavirus.
