August 17, 1949 will be remembered as the darkest day for Mirdita

The mayor of Rrëshen, Albert Mëlyshi, commemorated the massacre of August 17, 1949, where 14 people were massacred by the communists.

Mëlyshi stated that 14 martyrs from the most prominent families in Mirdita, 10 of them were shot and covered with live dirt and 4 were hanged on ropes.

From here would begin an ordeal of suffering for hundreds of families who were interned in Tepelena. It was also from here that the 45-year terror for all the people of Mirdita and the whole of Mirdita would start.

Today, in their honor, exactly at the place where they were executed, where their blood was spilled in Qafë i Valmir, the memorial was raised so that the place is not lost and becomes a place of pilgrimage.
