Djukanovic vs. 'Open Balkans': We need EU membership, not alternatives

Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic has spoken out against Albanian Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic over the possibility of joining the "Open Balkans" initiative.

After a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Djukanovic said that both Montenegro and other Western Balkan countries need EU membership, not alternatives like the "Open Balkans".

"We have different views on this initiative. I have heard many times from him that as part of his support for all regional initiatives, he also supports this. Also, I have stated publicly several times that I do not think this is an optimal initiative. Rather I see it as a kind of copy of the Berlin Process.

I do not think we need an alternative, we need membership. Therefore, I think it is completely natural for us to continue the negotiation process with the EU at full speed. I believe this Government will do that. I believe that soon we will unlock the negotiation process in the field of rule of law and thus we will start closing the negotiation chapters and I believe that with full participation in the Berlin Process we will give ourselves a good moment and that Mali "Montenegro will appreciate the advantage we built in the previous period and became the first future member of the EU ," Djukanovic said.
