State Department expected to lay off more than 1,300 employees

The State Department is laying off more than 1,300 people on Friday as part of an agency overhaul, according to an internal memo seen by CNN .

The layoffs will affect 1,107 civil service officials and 246 foreign service officials, the announcement said. It comes as the State Department implements a drastic reorganization as part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to shrink the federal government.

Hundreds of offices and bureaus are being eliminated or changed as a result of the changes.

"Approximately 3,000 members of the workforce will be leaving as part of the reorganization," the announcement said. That number includes people being laid off as well as those leaving voluntarily.

"In conjunction with the reorganization of the Department first announced by the Secretary of State on April 22, 2025, the Department is streamlining internal operations to focus on diplomatic priorities," the announcement said.

“The headcount reductions are carefully designed to affect non-core functions, duplicate or redundant offices, and offices where significant efficiencies can be found from centralizing or consolidating functions and responsibilities.”

Foreign service officers who receive “Reduction in Force” (RIF) notices on Friday will be placed on administrative leave for 120 days before they officially lose their jobs, according to the announcement. Most civil servants will be placed on leave for 60 days before their dismissal becomes effective, the announcement said.
