The construction of the new international airport in Vlora has once again come to the attention of foreign media, due to its positioning within the protected area of the Narta Lagoon, one of the most important bird habitats in the Mediterranean.

The lagoon, which is home to more than 200 bird species, including flamingos, the Dalmatian pelican and many rare species, is located along one of the most important bird migration corridors in Europe.

SRF News, in a recently published report, raises concerns that the construction of the airport in this area will have irreversible consequences for biodiversity. The article raises the alarm that the runway and air activity will disrupt migration routes and fragment the natural habitats of birds.

"Albania is experiencing a tourism boom – which is why the country wants new airports. A Swiss-Kosovar airport is building one on the Adriatic coast. But because Vlora airport is being built in a safe place for birds, nature lovers are protesting. Moreover, the animals, especially pelicans, pose a danger during takeoffs and landings," the article points out.

The article also brings to attention the objections the airport project has received from the opposition.

In February 2024, the government approved a change to the boundaries of the “Vjosa-Nartë” Protected Area, excluding the territory where the airport is being built, a decision that has been described as “legal manipulation to circumvent protection.”

The construction of the airport has also been accompanied by protests from environmentalists, who have stated that this airport violates biodiversity laws, but even the protests did not change the Rama government's decision.
