Lala: Veliaj wanted to return as mayor

Journalist Klodiana Lala has revealed behind-the-scenes details from the trial against former mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.

Invited to the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV, Lala said that Veliaj had filed a request for recourse in order to be reinstated as mayor, arguing that he did not pose a danger and that the arrest measure was unjustified.

The journalist also revealed that in the deliberation room there were strong debates among the judges due to Veliaj's status as acting mayor, but in the end the decision to keep him in prison was made without a single vote against.

"The Supreme Court (SC) was set in motion by a recourse filed by Veliaj. Mr. Veliaj was aiming to return to office as mayor. His arguments were, he claimed that he was elected and as such could not be held in prison, he considered the measure arbitrary since it does not destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses, or to leave since the goal is to return to office as mayor.

SPAK was caught on several counts, related to the criminal offense and the sentencing range, of which Veliaj is suspected, such as corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets. Secondly, there are suspicions that Veliaj may intimidate witnesses and destroy evidence, with prosecutors alleging that Veliaj has directed attacks on prosecutors and the judge.

Likewise, investigations continue into assets suspected to belong to Veliaj. According to them, Veliaj's release affects the collection of evidence. The Supreme Court has not provided a justification, because it takes time. Meanwhile, during the two hours in the deliberation room, there were debates regarding the fact that Veliaj is on duty, there were strong debates among the criminal panel, but it was decided to leave the security measure in force.

"Veliaj has two options, he will go to the Constitutional Court, but on June 17, the first instance court, after due diligence, rejected Veliaj's request for a change of measure, so he has the option to appeal this as well and repeat the requests for a replacement measure," said Lala.
