Beleri in the EP: The report on Albania is embellished, the reality speaks of

MEP Fredi Beleri has raised the alarm in the European Parliament over the situation in Albania, describing the European Commission's report for 2023-2024 as embellished and far from reality. In his speech at the plenary session, the representative of New Democracy and the European People's Party listed several key concerns that, according to him, indicate a democratic regression in the country.

“First, the census was questioned by eight out of nine national minorities for its methodology and results,” Beleri declared. He also criticized the justice reform, calling it a failure due to interference by the Albanian government. “A few hours ago, the EU ambassador denounced another interference by the Albanian prime minister,” he added.

Regarding the electoral processes, Beleri referred to the reports of the OSCE/ODIHR and the European Parliament, which according to him evidenced pressure on voters, media manipulation, interference by organized crime and dubious financing. He also highlighted the problem of properties, where only 50% have been returned to legitimate owners, while in areas with a Greek minority this figure is only 20%.

Further, the MEP also denounced the economic and financial situation, citing the statement of the Governor of the Bank of Albania that around 4 billion euros circulate outside the banking system in a country with a GDP of only 27 billion euros.
